Want to see the Lance of Longinus stuck in the actual, IRL Moon?

Anime fans are familiar with the famous scene from Neon Genesis Evangelion: the scarlet Lance of Longinus against the white Moon. For the twentieth anniversary of the airing of this landmark series,  Project EVA has started a crowdfunding project to get a replica of the Lance of Longinus actually pierced into the Moon.

[Is this for real?]

(Translated) from the website:

The year is 2015. The long awaited project begins. After 20 years, the Lance of Longinus will pierce the Moon.

They have sixty-five days to raise a hundred million yen to make this a reality.

[How do I pay?]

Here’s the payment page. You can cancel your orders any time prior to April 5th. Google transate’s and so on’s a fantastic resource for figuring out what individual buttons and such mean.

Register first by going to t he button and clicking that big green button. It’ll take you to a register/log in page. Register with the red link, where you can register via email or through facebook. The email option asks for an address, a password (and reenter), and a nickname. You’ll get an email confirmation after a few minutes; just click on the confirmation link and you’ll be returned to the payment screen.

You can select the quantity of each reward you want. Below that is the total payment. Then select how many Shogouki (Unit-01) Set A or Ayanami Rei Set Bs you would like for the ¥10,000 reward.

In the three text prompts at the second part, you put your name for the Team Longinus registration (the example they have is Ikari Shinji, heh), and your email. The last box is for comments or feedback, or maybe a “good luck!” of encouragement.

The third part is address and credit card billing info. Note: the address has to be Japan-specific, so if you live outside of Japan, you’ll have to deal with arranging and paying for shipping yourself if you’re getting something physical (google exporting guides for things shipped only domestically in Japan). The first box is the (Japanese) postal code; the last two boxes are the telephone number and the recipient.

[Why should I contribute?]

You might not get another chance like this in a lifetime. Let’s get this thing to the Moon. And if you contribute just eighty-five bucks, you can get something digitally stored in the Lance (imagine: I could put my Ayanami Rei analysis there forever); $426 and your name will be engraved forever on its surface. As of time of writing, we’re already 10% of the way funded, and it hasn’t even been twenty-four hours yet. We’ve got another two months to go.

Let’s do this thing.
